Help Eliminate Food Deserts! Cosponsor the Healthy Food Access for All Americans Act (HFAAA)

Currently an estimated 37 million Americans live in what the United States Department of Agricultures (USDA) classifies as a food desert—not living within a mile of a grocery store in urban communities or 10 miles of a grocery store in rural areas. The lack
of healthy foods has devastating effects on the health of communities, leading to higher incidents of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Cosponsor H.R. 2112: the Federal Government Decentralization Commission Act

A common thread that unites all of us in Congress is the desire to bring job growth and development to our districts. In the fight
to uplift our communities, I believe we should be exploring all avenues of potential growth.  Our country should be proud of our capital city, and the role it plays in running the federal government. However, the Founding Fathers could not have envisioned
the size of our current federal government system, where more than 300,000 federal employees work in the Washington DC metropolitan area in 190 federally-owned buildings and 500 leased buildings.  The days in which federal agencies needed to be centrally located
are long gone.  Modern technology allows agencies to carry out their missions remotely just as effectively as they do from Washington D.C.

Cosponsor H.R. 1553: Honor American Patriots of WWII with a “Congressional Gold Medal”

Wartime media accounts detail the intrepid volunteers, and organizations within several states have recognized them with memorials and websites. Yet the foresight, courage and sacrifices of these patriots have remained for the most part an untold story which
has not received formal, collective recognition. Their positive contributions were legion and the knowledge and experience they obtained under Canadian and British tutelage provided invaluable leadership later when many transferred into branches of the U.S.
Military. These patriots who served in the Canadian and British armed forces before transferring to lead the United States in the wartime effort include
LTC John C. Morgan, the only person to become a Prisoner of War after being awarded the Medal of Honor.  Other distinguished patriots include: Edward J. Tracey,
William R. Dunn,
Dominic Salvatore Gentile, and
John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

and unfair bankruptcy laws.

Cosponsor H.R. 2801:HOT CARS Act of 2017

On average, 37 children die a year from heat-related deaths after being trapped in a hot vehicle. A temperature inside a car can reach 125 degrees in a matter of minutes, and cracking the windows does not help slow the heating process. In conjunction, a
child’s body overheats 3-5 times faster than an adult body. Combined together this is a deadly situation that can be easily avoided with simple technology. Our legislation would require the Secretary of Transportation to issue a rule requiring all new passenger
motor vehicles to be equipped with a child safety alert system.  General Motors deploys an example of this technology, a Rear Seat Reminder feature, in multiple vehicles in the 2018 model year, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC. While we have systems
that tell you when you leave your keys in the car or keep your lights on, we have no current requirement for cars to have this simple feature that will help save the lives of children across the country. This is inexcusable. Join us and cosponsor this common-sense
piece of legislation, and help save the lives of children. If you have any questions, or want to cosponsor the Hot Cars Act of 2017 (HR 2801), please contact Anne Sokolov in Congressman Tim Ryan’s office at
anne.sokolov@mail.house.gov.

Cosponsor H.R. 2308: The 21st Century SHOP CLASS

From Benjamin Franklin and the lightening rod to Thomas Edison and the lightbulb, we have always been a country of inventors. The ability to imagine, tinker,
and create new inventions is one of the legacies of our history, and it must be an essential part of our country’s future. It is our responsibility to ensure that every child believes they can be the next great inventor or entrepreneur, and that they are given
the opportunity in school to enhance the skills necessary to accomplish these goals.
