Help Fight Human Trafficking by Bringing Transparency to Work Visas

Our nonimmigrant visa system lacks important transparency measures needed to protect American workers and temporary workers alike. Each visa category has different reporting requirements, and only some of the information collected through the visa process
is made public. Due to these reporting gaps, the federal government and the general public lack important information about workers’ countries of origin, identity of employers, and the work they perform. Immigration law and policy experts agree that our data
on foreign temporary workers is less thorough than that of other developed nations. When this information is hidden from policymakers and advocacy groups, workers remain vulnerable to human trafficking. One study

found that 71 percent of labor trafficking victims from outside the U.S. had entered the country on temporary visas.
