Bipartisan Letter to Fund Animal Fighting Investigations at the DOJ

Please join me in requesting additional report language and funding for the Department of Justice’s (“DOJ”) enforcement of anti-animal fighting statutes in the FY21 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. Animal fighting – where
animals are pitted against each other and forced to brutally fight to their deaths – occurs throughout the U.S. and the U.S. territories – it’s an epidemic that must be addressed. Yet, there are concerns that DOJ is currently unable to adequately enforce these
laws without additional resources, causing cases to be dropped for no legal basis or never pursued to begin with. Inaction on the enforcement side leaves animals to suffer tremendously at the hands of animal fighters. It also puts communities at risk from
the drug trafficking, gang violence, and other human violence that is associated with animal fighting activities.
