Too often, eligible patients are forced to decline participation in potentially life-saving clinical trials because their insurance company does not pay for the standard care associated with those trials. While Medicare and private insurance plans currently
have to cover the costs of routine care for patients enrolled in trials, some gaps in coverage still exist. Additionally, there is no current requirement for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to cover the costs of standard, non-experimental
medical treatment included in clinical trials. It is unacceptable that these patients lack access to this critical care.
