Bike Caucus Briefing–DOT’s New Bike/Ped Safety Initiative

Dear Colleague,
Last year 5,469 bicyclists and pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents. The number of fatalities, in fact, is increasing even as overall traffic fatalities decline. It is clear that a renewed focus on this issue is necessary. Last month, the US Department of Transportation announced a comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian safety initiative. The DOT will be conducting walking and biking assessments in each community and creating tools and research for local governments to use to improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.
