Support Opioid & Substance Use Disorder Research in FY21 Defense Appropriations

Evidence shows that effects of the addiction crisis reach far across our country. Not only has addiction ravaged cities and towns in every state, it has exacted a particularly high toll on our military populations. A recent paper published by the National
Bureau of Economic Research found that combat deployments in the Global War on Terror led to a 7% increase in prescription painkiller misuse. The authors went on to estimate that for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), health care costs resulting from
combat exposure total $1.04 billion annually for prescription opioid misuse and $470 million annually for heroin use.
