Letter Urging President Obama to Call for Natural Resource Sector Reforms in Burma

Dear Colleague:
For decades, Burma’s military elite have used Burma’s gemstones, gas, timber and other natural riches to sustain its grip on power, facilitated by a culture of secrecy and a complete lack of accountability. In 2011, President Thein Sein promised wide ranging political and economic reforms, but the delivery of these promises have fallen short and there is mounting international concern that the reform process has stalled. Unless this dynamic is tackled, there is a real risk that the country’s natural resources will continue to solely benefit the corrupt elite, undermining prospects of peace and real democracy in Burma.
