On March 14, 2014, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced that it would not renew its contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions and instead make a transition to a new arrangement to be proposed by the global multi-stakeholder community. The IANA functions contract expires on September 30, 2015, however, the NTIA has two options to renew the contract until September 30, 2017, and until September 30, 2019.
