Radical groups like ISIS prey on youth who lack clear purpose and direction by promising belongingness, status, and recognition for those who work on their behalf. How does the experience of discrimination relate to the radicalization of some youth, and what can the psychology of terrorism and the psychology of acculturation tell us about how we might better protect youth against radicalization? In this seminar, Drs. Lyons-Padilla and Gelfand will provide an overview of what we know about the factors that put some youth at risk—and protect other youth against—radicalization, and will discuss promising directions for prevention and intervention strategies.
