In his State of the Union address, President Obama noted that, while we’ve increased early childhood education, we need to go further and provide Pre-K for all. Establishing national pre-k will reduce the achievement gap, will improve the education all our kids receive and make our country more competitive. Education is a key component to investing in our nation’s future and our economy. Whether working towards a degree or a certificate, students who pursue post-secondary education statistically prove to have higher earnings and lower unemployment rates than those with a high school diploma. Yet, for far too many students and their hard-working families college seems like an unattainable goal. A 2015 study by the Pell Institute and University of Pennsylvania Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy found that in 2013, students from upper-income families were eight times more likely to receive a bachelor’s degree than students from families with the lowest incomes.
