Passing H.R. 3016 this Afternoon Will Break a Promise to Our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines

I write today to bring your attention to an urgent problem in H.R. 3016, The VA Provider Equity Act, and urge you to vote no on the bill. In it are many great provisions that help our Veterans and improve the VA. However, the way we are funding this bill is by cutting housing payments to children of Service Members. If they do not or are unable to transfer their GI Bill benefit within 180 days of enactment, their children will receive a 50% cut to their housing stipend.

Deadline Extended: Join Letter to the President in Support of Service

I write today to invite you to join Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Chris Coons and me in sending a bicameral, bipartisan letter to the President requesting that he prioritize national service in his FY17 budget request to Congress. The Corporation for Community and National Service (CNCS) oversees a wide range of programs in every community in America. These programs include Social Innovation Fund grants that promote literacy by encouraging parents to read with their children, Veterans Corps that helped fight the forest fires in Washington State last summer, and YouthBuild programs that teach young people construction skills while building affordable housing. In addition, after the recent state of emergency was declared in Flint, Michigan due to water contamination, CNCS deployed an AmeriCorps team to support state and local efforts to protect public health. These are essential programs that strengthen our communities and keep us safe.
