The Sound is a beloved national treasure. Its watershed contributes at least $17 billion to the regional economy from commercial and recreational fishing, to ecotourism and other water dependent businesses. This program is the nation’s core program for preventing fish and wildlife from becoming endangered. The State and Tribal Wildlife Grants Program provides states, territories, the District of Columbia, and Indian tribes with the resources they need to implement proactive and effective wildlife conservation actions aimed at keeping wildlife from becoming endangered. The program has been successful in preventing the listing of petitioned species and helping to conserve over 12,000 species identified by the states as at-risk.
