Psoriasis is America’s most prevalent chronic autoimmune disease, affecting 7.5 million Americans. It starts below the skin surface and can cause severe pain, disability, adverse mental health effects, and is associated with a variety of other serious health conditions. Yet, until FY 2010, the federal government had not established or funded a process to systematically collect data to learn about the onset, care, and cure for this disease. Thanks to a $1.5 million congressional appropriation in FY 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been able to focus on identifying and prioritizing issues in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis care and management. The CDC used this funding to develop a psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis public health agenda, resulting in a recent report entitled Developing and Addressing the Public Health Agenda for Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis, which identified a number of key areas needing study.
