Information Regarding the Closure of the Metrorail System on March 16th, 2016

In light of the recent announcement by the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority that Metrorail will be closed for the entirety of Wednesday, March 16, 2016 for safety checks, the Committee would like to remind offices of its regulations including provisions permitting the reimbursement of commuting expenses in extraordinary circumstances. Based on the facts and circumstances of the closure, and the diminished availability of public transit, the Committee will permit each employing authority to provide reimbursement for commuting expenses for employees on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the discretion of the Member or employing authority.

Special accommodations have been arranged for Members who wish to pay their respects. The designated entrance for Members of Congress is the business entrance located on Maryland Avenue. Increased Screening at Garage Entry Points into House Office Buildings

We have instructed the Sergeant at Arms to work with the Capitol Police to immediately begin implementing a plan of incorporating the House Office Buildings into the secure perimeter, which also comprises the Senate Office Buildings and the Capitol. Currently, individuals who are authorized to park in the garages are not screened prior to entering the House Office Buildings.
