Please join me in protecting graduate employees’ right to organize by cosponsoring H.R. 5104, the Respect Graduate Student Workers Act.
Since 2017, the Administration has unleashed a wave of attacks on countless workplace rights. Most recently, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) proposed a rule to strip graduate student workers’ ability to unionize at their employing institutions.
Graduate student workers are vital for the functioning of our nation’s colleges and universities. They provide valuable services by conducting research, teaching students, and assisting professors. They are employees, regardless of the educational relationship
with their employer, and deserve and the ability to collectively bargain for benefits. This principle was most recently affirmed by the NLRB in 2016 in their Columbia decision (The Trustees of Columbia University in the city of New York and Graduate
Workers of Columbia-GWU, UAW).
The Respect Graduate Student Workers Act would block the anti-worker NLRB rule from going into effect and prevent future efforts deny graduate student workers labor rights. It also expresses a sense of Congress that graduate student workers should be considered
employees for the purposes of the National Labor Relations Act.
I hope you will consider cosponsoring H.R. 5104 to respect the voices of our nation’s graduate student workers. If you have any questions regarding this legislation, your staff should contact Andrew O’Neill of my staff at Andrew.O’Neill@mail.house.gov.
