Dear Colleague,

Our frontline health care workers have valiantly and selflessly taken up the call in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the virulence of COVID-19 and a dire shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), we now face a grave health care worker
shortage in many areas across the country. Simply put, the number of COVID-19 cases is not only overwhelming our medical supply chain but is also overwhelming our already overtaxed health care workforce.

Some states have begun to take steps to alleviate the shortage of medical personnel,

by allowing retired doctors and nurses to return to practice
, or
accelerate the graduation of medical and nursing students
to supplement the existing workforce. These are critical steps toward addressing this challenge, but we still face a persistent and overwhelming need in hot spot areas for a dramatic influx of personnel
to aid health care workers in our fight against COVID-19.

That is why we are asking for your support for the Temporary Responders for Immediate Aid in Grave Emergencies (TRIAGE) Act,
which would provide a path for former health care workers (doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, technicians, etc.) who might have allowed their license/certifications to expire, to return to the medical field and leverage their training
to help save lives. This bill will:

  • Empower states with resources to provide for emergency license renewals for former health care workers for the duration of the national public health emergency;
  • Direct Health and Human Services (HHS) to create a hotline and website to serve as a single-point intake for former health care workers looking to volunteer;
  • Direct HHS to work directly with state departments of public health to coordinate the deployment of volunteers based on local demand signals;
  • Direct HHS to coordinate with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deploy volunteers to support federal COVID-19 response actions; and

In many states, our healthcare system is being pushed beyond capacity as doctors, nurses, first responders, and other health care workers are doing everything in their power to save lives. This bill helps to deliver the urgently needed reinforcements our
health care heroes desperately need.

To become a cosponsor of the TRIAGE Act, please fill out THIS FORM or contact Jon Green (Jon.Green@mail.house.gov)
in Rep. Crow’s office or Walker Barrett (Walker.Barrett@mail.house.gov) in Rep. Waltz’s office.

Sincerely,
