SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC INNOVATION: COSPONSOR THE POINT-OF-CARE TESTING PRIZE COMPETITIONS ACT OF 2020
Current Cosponsors: Sheila Jackson Lee
I write to invite you to join me as a cosponsor of H.R. 6600, the Point-of-Care Testing Prize Competitions Act of 2020.
Point-of-care infectious disease testing provides results at the site of patient care, in real time, rather than in hours or days. With the rapid uptick in cases of COVID-19 across the United States, this type of testing could lead to prompter diagnoses,
and therefore, limit the rate of spread significantly.
H.R. 6600 is designed to harness the power of scientific innovation in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill would direct the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in consultation with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), to rapidly
launch prize competitions encouraging the development of a point-of-care COVID-19 test capable of producing accurate results in under 30 minutes for multiple samples.
Prize competitions have a long and successful history of spurring innovation in aeronautics, aviation, engineering, and scientific fields. This is an obvious and easy area in which federal direction could help channel increased efforts towards an extremely
important objective that currently remains elusive.
For more information or to sign onto the bill, please reach out to Grace Rubinger of my staff at
