Become an Original Cosponsor of the Public Transit Safety Program Improvement Act

Groups Endorsing: Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU)

Original Cosponsors: Lynch

Dear Colleague:

Safety is paramount for the thousands of frontline transit workers of transit systems around the country. These workers play a critical role in moving people around our local communities, spurring economic growth and development, and getting students to
and from school.

Under MAP-21, Congress authorized the Public Transportation Safety Program, which included a National Public Transportation Safety Plan to improve the safety of all public transportation systems that receive Federal transit funds. The purpose of this plan
is to guide the national effort in managing the safety risks and safety hazards within our nation’s public transportation system. However, currently only management is required to sign-off on the safety plan.

This is why I invite you to join me in introducing the Public Transit Safety Program Improvement Act to ensure that frontline transit employees are at the negotiating table with management when establishing a public transportation agency
safety plan. It is vital that labor have a seat at the table with management when discussing frontline safety and putting in place system wide safety plans.

It is essential that Congress take the necessary steps to ensure that transit systems receiving federal funds are developing, implementing, and improving strategies to ensure that transit achieves the highest level of safety. This can best be done if both
labor and management are making the safety decisions together. If you have any questions or would like to be an original cosponsor, please contact Hannah Cooper (Hannah.Cooper@mail.house.gov, x5-8699) by
COB April 9, 2020.

Sincerely,

Anthony G. Brown
