Become an Original Cosponsor of the National Transit Workforce Training Act of 2020

Groups Endorsing: Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO

Dear Colleague:

A 2017 workforce report from Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy projected that a $1 trillion infrastructure proposal could generate 11.4 million jobs over the next ten years. This would bump up the proportion of infrastructure-related
jobs from 12 percent to 14 percent of total U.S. jobs—with 8.7 million projected jobs generated in the transportation, material moving, construction, and extraction occupations.[1]  With new
and changing transportation jobs on the horizon and an increased emphasis on transit as a solution to congestion mitigation, we must invest in our workers and workforce to ensure our workers are well trained to keep up with federal investment.  However, even
as the industry grows, there is still a skills gap and lack of training for frontline local transportation employees.

This is why we are introducing the National Transit Workforce Training Act of 2020.
This bill establishes a National Transit Frontline Training Center to address the needs of the frontline transit workforce through standards-based training in the maintenance and operations occupations. The Center will be targeted to both rural and
urban transit systems, and award grants to a nonprofit organization with a demonstrated capacity to develop and provide transit career ladder programs through labor-management partnerships and apprenticeships on a nationwide basis.  The Center, in coordination
with the Federal Transit Administration and public transportation authorities, will develop and conduct training and educational programs for frontline local transportation employees engaged in Government-aid public transportation work.

Above all, we must invest in our workers and workforce.  It’s critical that frontline local transportation employees are properly qualified and prepared for the changing needs and standards of the industry.  If you have any questions or would like to be
an original cosponsor, please contact Hannah Cooper (Hannah.Cooper@mail.house.gov, 5-8699) by
COB April 9, 2020.

Sincerely,

Anthony G. Brown
