Sending Office: Honorable Tulsi Gabbard
SIGN ON BY: MARCH 17, 2020
Please join me in submitting a letter to the Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies requesting $525.3 million in funding (equal to the President’s FY 2021 Budget) for the National
Wildlife Refuge Systems for Fiscal Year 2021.
The National Wildlife Refuge System’s mission is to administer a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management, and restoration of fish, wildlife, and plant resources and their habitats within the United States for the benefit of
present and future generations of Americans. With 567 refuges in all U.S. States and Territories, the Refuge System provides lands and waters for thousands of species of wildlife and plants, sanctuary for hundreds of threatened and endangered species, and
secure spawning areas for economically and recreationally important native fish.
The Refuge System generates income in sales for local communities, supports over 35,000 jobs annually, and contributes millions of dollars in tax revenue. However, the Refuge System has been under increasing strain from an operations and maintenance backlog
of over $1.15 billion, including severe shortages for law enforcement staffing and visitor services, vital monitoring activities for wildlife resources, and upkeep of critical Refuge facilities.
It is imperative that we make important legacy investments in our refuges now to ensure that these fish, wildlife, and habitats are protected for future generations.
I encourage you to sign on to the below letter in support of funding for the National Wildlife Refuge System at $525.3 million for Fiscal Year 2021.
