Support Joint DOD-University Research for our Warfighters

Deadline: March 10

Dear Colleague:

Please join us in sending the following letter to Chairman Visclosky and Ranking Member Calvert encouraging the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense to support continued funding for the Department of Defense’s University Affiliated Research Center
(UARC) research program for the Fiscal Year 2021.

UARCs provide universities opportunities to build partnerships with both industry experts and the Department of Defense in order to engage in advanced research that leads to providing our warfighters with the best technologies and capabilities.

Universities must go through a competitive process to become a University Affiliated Research Center.  Universities must demonstrate that they are at the forefront of science and innovation in a specific research area.  Once designated as a UARC, the university
provides dedicated facilities and share these facilities with the Department of Defense and industrial participants to conduct collaborative research.  This program is not only cost-efficient for the DoD, it is an innovative way to engage the next generation
of innovators with industry and DoD experts.

Please join me in supporting research and innovation for our universities and warfighters.  If you would like to sign on or have any questions, please contact Samantha Price (Carbajal) at or Jacqui Shaw (Thompson) at

Dear Chairman Visclosky and Ranking Member Calvert,

As you begin work on the FY 2021 Defense Appropriations, we urge you to support funding for the Department of Defense’s University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs). The UARCs are a Department of Defense (DoD) research program that has successfully promoted
university-led collaborations between universities, industries and DoD to conduct breakthrough research and assist DoD in maintaining technological superiority.

University Affiliated Research Centers are found nationwide and have successfully promoted innovative research and development for university students and provided opportunities for these students to serve their country with their research. This research
program promotes utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and the next generation of innovators to conduct critical research that will ultimately provide our warfighters with the most revolutionary capabilities.

The UARCs are the products of a competitive research program that identifies universities that are at the forefront of specific research areas. As a UARC, universities share their facilities with industries and the DoD to engage in collaborative research
and innovation. While university students are provided the opportunity to conduct advanced research with both industry and military experts, industries and DoD are given access to existing state-of-the-art facilities to not only further advance research in
a specific area but transition this research into technologies our warfighters need in a cost-efficient way.

UARCs provide a venue for integrated research that is ultimately used to meet DoD future needs. We must fully invest in research programs such as UARCs as they promote partnerships between students and government and invest in future innovation and technologies
for our military.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.
