Prevent the Spread of Invasive Lionfish, FY21

Deadline for Cosigners: Tuesday March 3

Please sign-on here.

FY21 Cosigners: Reps. Ted Deutch, Donna E. Shalala

Dear Colleague:

Please join me in supporting the efforts of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), higher institutions of education, and nonprofit research organizations in researching and combatting the species of lionfish Pterois miles and Pterois
volitans, in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

Lionfish are not native to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast of the U.S., nor do they have any natural predators. This causes native species to compete for resources, which is depleting the health and numbers of their populations. This
funding request would allocate $1,500,000 to the Cooperative Science and Education Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and include programmatic language to award competitive grants to institutions of higher education and nonprofit
research organizations.

In order to support NOAA’s work and programs researching and addressing non-native lionfish in our oceans, I request that you join me on a letter to the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, copied below, strongly urging they include
funding for a response to this concern.

If you have any questions, please contact Elena Kochnowicz in the office of Congressman Alcee L. Hastings at or call 5-1313. To sign on, please
