COSPONSOR THE CLEAN FEDERAL FLEET ACT (H.R. 5554)
Current cosponsors: Reps. Blumenauer, Doyle, Huffman, Kennedy, Levin, Lowenthal, Neguse, Pocan
I invite you to join me in cosponsoring the Clean Federal Fleet Act (H.R. 5554), a bill that would require any vehicles purchased by the federal government to comply with the Obama-era low greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) standards.
The federal government should be leading the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase fuel economy. Increased fuel economy of America’s cars and trucks helps to enhance energy security, reduce GHG emissions that contribute to climate change,
and save consumers (in this case, taxpayers) money at the gas pump. Studies show that reducing GHG emissions protects and improves public health and welfare, including reducing the risk of asthma, heart attacks, lung cancer, and premature death. The Obama-era
clean car standards were estimated to reduce global warming pollution by as much as 570 million metric tons (MMT) in 2030 – the equivalent to shutting down 140 typical coal-fired power plants for an entire year.
Currently, federal agencies largely use vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. In 2017, electric vehicles represented less than 1 percent of alternative fuel vehicles in agencies’ fleets, while hybrids represented approximately 11 percent. Applying
the Obama-era clean car standards to the federal fleet would provide immense environmental and economic benefits, given that between 2011 and 2015, federal agencies spent more than $1.6 billion to purchase at least 64,500 passenger vehicles and light trucks.
Moreover, in fiscal year 2018, the federal fleet inventory included 644,545 vehicles.
The Clean Federal Fleet Act provides a clear standard for our federal fleets that has proven environmental and economic benefits and that will help protect against damaging, politically-motivated rollbacks to our nation’s clean car standards. For
