Dear Colleague:

Please join us in cosponsoring a resolution that supports the goals and ideals of the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. In honor of the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, a founder of modern nursing, the World Health Organization
has designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. With more than four million registered nurses in the United States and more than twenty million registered nurses around the world, it is imperative that we recognize and celebrate
the essential contributions these practitioners provide to the workforce, research, and the health of our nation.

As we tackle the health care issues of the day, such as the opioid epidemic, maternal and child mortality, and an aging population, nurses and midwives continually provide high-quality transformative health care in all communities, including rural, underserved,
and vulnerable areas. In fact, for the 18th year in a row, Gallup polls demonstrate that Americans rank nurses as having the highest honesty and ethical standards of any profession.

As the largest group of health care professionals, nurses offer care to patients and their families in hospitals, long-term care facilities, community centers, schools, workplaces, and homes. As quintessential patient advocates, nurses and midwives provide
leadership to eliminate health disparities and educate communities on disease prevention and health promotion. They are fundamental in efforts to reduce primary and maternity care provider shortages all while improving health care outcomes.

Join us in recognizing 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife and celebrate the daily high-quality patient-centered care these clinicians provide. To cosponsor, please contact Tonia Wu with Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (Tonia.Wu@mail.house.gov)
or Burke Smith with Rep. David Joyce (Burke.Smith@mail.house.gov).

Sincerely,
