Cosponsor Every Veteran Counts Act (H.R. 5689)
116th Cosponsors: Ryan
I write to ask you to cosponsor my bill, the Every Veteran Counts Act, H.R. 5689, which would require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to conduct an updated national survey of veterans.
To date, VA has conducted six national surveys of veterans. These are conducted approximately every decade, and the last survey was completed in 2010. These surveys help VA in planning its future programs and services for veterans. They also help Congress
and other stakeholders to better understand the needs of veterans, and subsequently develop policies and allocate resources to ensure these needs are met. The last survey identified veteran demographics (age, gender, race, education level, residence, etc.),
changing trends in the veteran population, and utilization and awareness of VA benefits and services. Because this data is nearly ten years old and outdated, a new study is needed to provide VA, Congress, State Department of Veterans Affairs, veteran service
organizations, and other stakeholders with current information to ensure that we have an accurate understanding of the veteran population and their emerging needs to better guide legislative and policy decisions. Additionally, there is important data that
VA has not been able to accurately collect, such as LGTBQ+ information. Lack of accurate data on such populations limits our ability to ensure that their needs are appropriately met.
This is why I introduced my bill, the Every Veteran Count Acts, to require VA to conduct a national survey of veterans. This mandated study will build off the previous study to show any changes or trends in the veteran population and better identify the
needs of veterans so that we can effectively tailor policies to this population.
If you would like to cosponsor my bill or need additional information, please contact Andrew Gnau at
