I write to request your co-sponsorship of my bill the Homes for Veterans Act (H.R. 2225).
To help fight homelessness among veterans and to help the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs achieve its goal of ending veterans’ homelessness, Congress created the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH)
program. HUD-VASH is a collaborative program combining HUD housing vouchers with VA supportive services to help Veterans who are homeless, and their families, find and sustain permanent housing. This program has proven to be critical in our fight to eliminating
Unfortunately, across the country, we hear countless stories of veterans who have HUD-VASH vouchers, but are unable to find a landlord willing to rent to them. This problem is especially true in high-cost areas of the country, where landlords can charge
rents on the private market that exceed the value of HUD’s voucher.
To address this problem and to encourage landlords to rent to veterans, I have introduced H.R. 2225, which will provide a tax credit to landlords who accept HUD-VASH vouchers in the amount of 10% of the voucher’s value. This small tax credit will help offset
the landlord’s cost of complying with HUD-VASH regulatory requirements, incentivize landlords across the country to accept HUD-VASH vouchers, and provide long-term stable housing for veterans and their families.
As a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I believe that we need to do more to address problems that veterans with HUD-VASH vouchers encounter when trying to find affordable rental units. I urge you to join me in the fight to eradicate veterans’
homelessness by co-sponsoring H.R. 2225.
