        Request for Cosponsor(s)

Endorsed By: Advocates for Youth, GLSEN, Human Rights Campaign, National Center for Transgender Equality

Deadline: January 17, 2020

Dear Colleague:

I invite you to join me in becoming an original cosponsor of my resolution supporting the goals and ideals of No Name-Calling Week. This initiative is supported by K-12 educators and students looking to end name calling and bullying in schools.

Started in 2004, No Name-Calling Week is dedicated to raising awareness for the thousands of students across the country who experience bullying on a daily basis. This is especially true for students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or
queer (LGBTQ), LGBT students of color, and gender nonconforming students. Too often, schools can be challenging spaces for these individuals due to a high level of name calling.

Moreover, a survey conducted by GLSEN found that 87 percent of LGBTQ middle and high school students frequently hear negative remarks about transgendered people and over 70% of LGBTQ students were verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation.

This type of name calling, and bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity has profound negative health impacts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), homophobia can affect one’s physical and mental health, including
increased risk of depression and suicide.

Bullying also has adverse effects on personal health, and it is common in schools. The CDC reports that 1 in 5 high school students reported physical, verbal, or social bullying. In middle school the percentage is even higher with 33% of students being bullied
in a week.

We must act together to fight against name calling and bullying in schools for all students, especially those who are disproportionately impacted.

That is why I urge you to become an original cosponsor of my resolution supporting the goals and ideals of No Name-Calling Week, and to encourage more dialogue in schools about combating name calling and bullying.

For questions or to sign on as an original cosponsor please email Victor Yang on my staff at Victor.Yang@mail.house.gov by Friday, January 17th.

Sincerely,

/s/

Barbara Lee
