I invite you to cosponsor the Veterans Healthcare Improvement Act (H.R. 1721), legislation intended to help guarantee adequate resources for veterans’ healthcare programs.
It is our duty to make certain that the Department of Veterans Affairs has the resources it needs to provide the healthcare our veterans earned and deserve. With a new incoming administration, it is critically important that Congress has the information
it needs to evaluate the Administration’s budgets and provide needed resources to veterans. As the Chairwoman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Health Subcommittee, this issue is of paramount importance to me.
My bill would require the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to verify the accuracy and adequacy of the Department of Veterans Affairs budget for medical care. The requirement for GAO to review the VA healthcare budget request was first passed as part
of the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act in 2009. However, the three-year requirement expired after 2013.
My bill would renew this requirement to ensure the VA never again runs low on funds for veterans’ healthcare, as it did in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Providing Congress with a third-party, neutral analysis of the VA’s healthcare programs will help ensure our
nation’s veterans receive these vital healthcare services.
