Dear Colleague:

Please join us as a cosponsor of H.R. 5170, Safe Skies Act. This bipartisan bill establishes one level of safety within our airspace by ensuring that cargo pilots are operating under the same flight, duty, and rest times as commercial pilots.

Currently, cargo pilots operate under weaker safety guidelines then their commercial pilot counterparts and are not subjected to science-based fatigue standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The Safe Skies Act would address pilot fatigue and ensure pilots are rested and alert. Cargo planes fly in the same skies, land in the same airports, and use the same routes as commercial airplanes. In 2010, Congress passed legislation for the Department
of Transportation to establish firmer safety guidelines for pilots. Unfortunately, cargo pilots were left out of these rules, resulting in cargo pilots being on duty much longer than commercial pilots and having no guaranteed sleep time despite flying fatigue-inducing
night and early morning flights. Let’s work to establish one level of safety for all pilots and close this unsafe loophole. All pilots should enjoy the same safety standards no matter what kind of plane they are flying.

I hope you join us as a cosponsor of this science-based bill that seeks to bring sensible solutions to airspace safety concerns. To sign up as a cosponsor, contact Johanna Montiel at in Representative Carbajal’s office.
