Fifty years ago, on December 4, 1969, my dear friend and Illinois Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton was murdered by the Chicago Police Department and FBI as he slept in his bedroom.  While this assassination ended Fred
Hampton’s life, it could not extinguish his legacy and the important work he did on behalf of the marginalized in Chicago and around the world.  I was privileged to work alongside Fred in our righteous struggle, which continues to inform my work in Congress.
