Dear Colleague,

I would like to extend an invitation to a staff briefing hosted by Americans United for Life (AUL) on
Monday, November 18th at 11:30 am. The topic of the briefing is
June Medical Services v. Gee, a challenge to Louisiana’s admitting privileges law, and an amicus brief in support of the Louisiana law being led by Whip Steve Scalise and Congressman Mike Johnson.
Lunch will be served.

In early 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear its first direct abortion case since Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh joined the Court. June Medical, an abortion provider in Louisiana, is challenging the constitutionality of a Louisiana law that requires all
physicians performing abortions to have admitting privileges—the ability to directly admit a patient into the hospital when emergencies arise—within thirty miles of their abortion facility. The Fifth Circuit upheld Louisiana’s law, finding that it did not
create an “undue burden” on access to abortion in Louisiana.

AUL Chief Legal Officer Steve Aden will present on the facts and arguments of the case and answer questions about the case and the brief. A corresponding brief is being led in the Senate by Senators Blackburn and Kennedy. Members will be able to sign onto
the brief from November 18th through December 17th
