Sending Office: Honorable Rosa L. DeLauro

Please join me in cosponsoring the Flu Vaccine Act, which authorizes a $1 billion investment over five years for a universal flu vaccine ($200 million each year) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. A universal flu vaccine
could be administered once or twice and provide a lifetime of protection.
Currently, flu virus health officials are forced to predict what strains the vaccine should try to combat in a given season. A universal flu vaccine would take the guesswork out of seasonal flu protection because the immune system’s ability to fight many
viral strains would be boosted.
As evidenced by the ineffectiveness of last year’s vaccine and the unacceptable number of flu-related deaths, it is all the more apparent that we need a vaccine that could protect against new mutant strains of virus, as well as other strains that pop up
during flu season.
