Dear Colleague:

Please join me in sending a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo regarding diplomacy in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As you may be aware, the first-ever Russia-Africa Summit was held in Sochi two weeks ago.  Additionally, China’s Belt and Road Initiative has been active throughout the African continent.  However, while Russia and China increase their engagement in Africa,
Egypt remains the only country in Africa that Secretary Pompeo has visited as Secretary of State since his confirmation in early 2018.

This letter urges Secretary Pompeo to prioritize Sub-Saharan Africa in his future diplomatic travel and encourages diplomatic engagement on the continent at the highest levels of the State Department. Given the range of critical and unfolding events on the
continent right now, and the increased interest of our adversaries in many African countries, I believe it is more important than ever that the Administration reaffirm its diplomatic commitment to supporting democracy and peace in Sub-Saharan Africa.  Secretary
Pompeo’s personal engagement and diplomacy is key to maintaining America’s relationships with these developing nations, many of which have demonstrated potential to become budding democracies.

Please contact Stacy Thompson in my office ( to sign onto this letter.
