Dear Colleague,

We write to you to invite you to become a member of the American Sikh Caucus in the 116th Congress.

Sikhism has been a part of the American fabric for more than a century. The first Sikh immigrants arrived in California and Washington state in the early 1900s, where they helped build the Transcontinental Railroad and cultivated fertile farmland. Today,
there are more than 500,000 Sikhs living in the United States, running small businesses, local charities, and making great contributions to this country. They have served in the United States military and every branch of government, including Dalip Singh Saund,
the first Asian American and only Sikh American to serve in Congress. Sikh Americans are represented in communities in every corner of this nation.

Since September 11, 2001, there has been a dramatic increase in hate-based violence against Sikhs, including a shooting in Olathe, Kansas that killed one Sikh IT worker and wounded another. According to Pro Publica, many Sikh cab drivers are also victims
of violence from those who do not understand the religion and its symbols. This isn’t an issue limited to just adults. A recent survey done by Sikh Coalition found that 50% of Sikh children in four states were bullied, which is a much higher rate than their
peers, 32%. This number jumps to 67% for Sikh children who wear a turban. Many Sikhs experience daily encounters with discrimination and hate incidents that go unreported and unrecognized.

These terrible statistics call out for more congressional attention to the American Sikh community. The American Sikh Caucus will serve to educate Members of Congress and the general public about these issues

If you are interested in joining the American Sikh Caucus, please contact Tigran Agdaian in Rep. John Garamendi’s office at or Lauren Gillespie in Rep. Ted Yoho’s at
