Cosponsor Legislation to Provide Menstrual Products to Homeless Youth
October 30, 2019
I invite you to join me as a cosponsor of my bill, the Homeless Youth Menstrual Product Access Act, which would allow Runaway and Homeless Youth (RHY) grants awarded through the Department of Health and Human Services to be used to provide
menstrual products to the young women being served through this program.
According to data from the University of Chicago’s Chapin House, roughly two million young women between the ages of 13 and 25 experience homelessness in any given year. Access to adequate sanitary products is a challenge for women and girls who face a lack
of stable housing, but that challenge is even greater for younger homeless women. This can lead to difficult hygiene choices that can result in serious health problems and further exacerbate social stigma and isolation.
The Runaway and Homeless Youth Program provides grants to public and nonprofit entities that serve minors living in homeless shelters or on the street or who are at risk of separating from their homes. The
Homeless Youth Menstrual Product Access Act simply would allow RHY grant recipients to use a portion of those funds to provide menstrual hygiene products as part of the services they provide.
I invite you to join me as an original cosponsor of the Homeless Youth Menstrual Product Access Act. If you have any questions or would like to become a cosponsor, please contact me or Chonya Davis-Johnson on my staff at Chonya.Davis@mail.house.gov
