Flower farmers in the United States are struggling to compete. Almost 80% of cut flower purchases in the United States are imported from other countries, leaving American farmers at a disadvantage in a market dominated by countries with less regulations
and cheap labor. Meanwhile, the federal government contributes to this by often purchasing foreign flowers instead of those grown in the United States to decorate their facilities. Congress should do its part and ensure that the federal government supports
the flower farmers it represents.
I am proud to introduce bipartisan legislation with the support of the Congressional Cut Flower Caucus Co-Chairs, titled the American Grown Act. I encourage my friends on both sides of the aisle to do right by the flower and greens farmers in their districts
and sign on to this important legislation. By requiring the Federal Government to use American grown flowers and greens to decorate its facilities, we will be supporting our farmers and raising awareness of their beautiful products.
H.R 3019 – The American Grown Act will:
- Require that federal agencies may only purchase cut flowers and greens produced in the United States.
American flower and greens farmers are in dire need and federal agencies should put America first by purchasing exclusively from flower farmers in our country. Please join the fight to help U.S. farmers by cosponsoring H.R. 3019, the American Grown Act.
