Please join me in introducing the Universal School Meals Program Act. Every child deserves access to three full meals a day, year-round. There are nearly 1 in 10 households in Minnesota that struggle with food insecurity, as do many households across the
country. We must find a way to address this crisis. When our children have full stomachs, they have healthy minds. My bill, the Universal School Meals Program Act would:
- Provide universal free meals to all children enrolled in school all year long.
- Provide a 30-cent reimbursement for schools that have a local food procurement to ensure that our schools are providing healthy, local food options to our children.
- Increase school breakfast and school lunch reimbursements rates to match the recommended rates of the
USDA School Nutrition and Meal Cost Study – April 2019.
Studies show that access to meals in school increase child participation, which leads to an increase in the child’s health and learning. In one of the wealthiest countries in the world, no child should be turned away from a meal if they can not afford it.
Please join me in introducing this important legislation that ensures all children have access to three full meals a day, year-round.
