Please join Representatives Chrissy Houlahan, Eliot Engel, Nita Lowey, Lois Frankel, Jackie Speier, Diana DeGette, Rosa DeLauro, Barbara Lee, and Carolyn Maloney as an original co-sponsor of our bill, the Support UNFPA Funding Act of 2019.
The Support UNFPA Funding Act of 2019 authorizes funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to:
· End preventable maternal deaths
· End the unmet need for contraceptives and promote a human-rights based approach to family planning
· End gender-based violence
· End harmful practices, such as child marriage and female genital mutilation
· Complement U.S. national security and humanitarian efforts
Reproductive health care is central to gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, global health and sustainable development. It is one of the most cost-effective investments the United States can make.
However, on July 12th, 2019, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the Administration determined that UNFPA was in violation of the Kemp-Kasten amendment and that the Administration would be withholding its contribution to UNFPA for the
third year in a row. This determination is based on a conflation of UNFPA’s presence in China with supporting China’s coercive birth limitation policies and is wholly unfounded. UNFPA is a critical – and sometimes the only – provider of care for women and
their families around the world, and when women and their children can survive and thrive, communities are more stable and peaceful.

The deadline to be an original cosponsor is COB October 16th.
