Of the more than 1.2 million school-aged children of servicemen and women, more than
80 percent attend public schools. Virtually all school districts educate a child whose parent or guardian is serving in our Armed Forces, whether stationed here or abroad and whether on active duty or in the National Guard or Reserves.
ISSUE – All military families experience frustration and difficult choices associated with moving. According to a survey of 5,650 military
and veterans conducted in 2017 by the Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN), 43 percent of military families had elected to live separately from the active military member at some point in their career, with 21 percent citing a need for continuity in their
children’s education. Unfortunately, chronic underfunding of the Impact Aid program means that many schools that are attended by military-connected children are at a loss, without the resources they need to help their students thrive.
BILL SUMMARY – The Survey Our Military Impacted Schools Act would evaluate the unmet renovation, repair, and expansion needs of elementary and
secondary schools across the country that serve many dependents of U.S. military personnel and federal government employees.
IMPACT – All of our military-connected school children should have an equal and fair opportunity for academic success. This requires that those individuals who make up our nation’s educational system—our teachers, principals, school nurses,
coaches, and counselors—understand the unique situations the children of our service members experience. The Survey Our Military Impacted Schools Act will help educators and policymakers better understand the needs of schools that are attended by military-connected
children and adapt to ensure that those needs are met.
