Resolution Calling for India to Be a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council
Current Cosponsors: Khanna, Krishnamoorthi, Watson Coleman, Meng, H. Johnson (GA), Bera
Deadline: TODAY AT 11:00AM
I invite you to cosponsor a resolution supporting India’s pursuit of a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
As the United Nations General Assembly meets for its 74th Session this week, we are reminded how important this body is to maintaining international dialogue and continuing the mission of peaceful resolution to global issues. This is especially true for
the U.N. Security Council, where critical decisions affecting regional and international stability are made. Unfortunately, the Security Council makeup still reflects the world as it was in 1945 when the United Nations was created. Despite the fact that the
U.N. has grown from 51 member nations at its inception to nearly 200, the Security Council has not grown to reflect these dramatic changes.
Adding India as a permanent member of the UN Security Council has enjoyed strong bipartisan support, including from both President Obama and President Trump. During his visit to India in 2015, President Obama reaffirmed his support for India’s candidature
to the Security Council stating, “I can say today in the years ahead, I look forward to a reformed U.N. Security Council that includes India as a permanent member.” President Trump offered his support during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2017.
If you have any questions or would like to be added as a cosponsor, please contact James Johnson with Rep. Pallone’s office at firstname.lastname@example.org or 5-4671.
