Join Amicus Brief Supporting Floral Artist Barronelle Stutzman & All Americans’ Artistic Freedom

Case Background: Barronelle Stutzman is the owner of Arlene’s Flowers in Richland, WA.  Six years ago, she referred a longtime friend and customer to another florist because she couldn’t create the floral arrangements to celebrate his same-sex
wedding.  The Washington State Attorney General sued her and, since then, has targeted Barronelle to force her to create art that celebrate marriages in violation of her convictions.

Barronelle serves all her customers; like many creative professionals, she simply can’t create custom floral art that celebrates events or expresses messages in conflict with her beliefs.  But rather than respecting her right to peacefully live and work
consistent with her convictions, Washington State has used unprecedented measures to go after Barronelle’s business and sue her personally as well.  The ACLU also filed a lawsuit against her.

On June 6, 2019, the Washington Supreme Court ruled against Barronelle for a second time, after the U.S. Supreme Court instructed it to reexamine her case in light of the
Masterpiece Cakeshop decision. On September 11, 2019, Alliance Defending Freedom asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the Court’s decision and uphold Barronelle’s freedom to create freely.

Members’ Amicus Brief: Members of Congress are filing an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to hear Barronelle’s case—to not only give her a chance for justice but to ensure that no creative professional faces government coercion to create
art inconsistent with their convictions.

People will have different views, beliefs, and convictions about important issues like marriage. But the First Amendment’s enduring promise is that people of good will are free to live out their beliefs without government hostility or punishment.

Please join this important amicus brief by contacting Nick Brown in Rep. Jody Hice’s office at, or Colleen Castle in Rep. Vicki Hartzler’s office at
Deadline to join is Monday, October 14 at 5:00 pm EST.
