I invite you to cosponsor the Methane Waste Prevention Act of 2019 (H.R. 2711), which will reinstate and update the Obama-era methane waste and pollution prevention standards of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Environmental Protection Agency
Methane, the primary ingredient of natural gas, is a powerful global warming pollutant when released into the atmosphere, but a valuable resource when captured – a resource that belongs to the American public when extracted from public lands. The methods
used to capture methane from oil and gas operations control air toxics and smog precursors, as well.
In August, the EPA proposed weakening existing methane leak inspection and repair requirements for oil and gas operations. Last year, the BLM gutted measures designed to reduce methane venting, flaring and leaks from oil and gas operations on public lands.
These actions were taken despite the fact that the public and a wide array of stakeholders – including major oil companies – recognize the benefits of robust methane safeguards, and actively support federal regulations that identify and help curb methane emissions
from oil and gas operations.
The Methane Waste Prevention Act of 2019 will reverse these harmful actions and update the 2016 BLM and EPA standards. For more information or if you would like to cosponsor this legislation, please contact Nikki Roy (firstname.lastname@example.org).
