Sending Office: Honorable Albio Sires
Disapprove Russia’s Re-entry into the G-7
Please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution disapproving of the President’s invitation to President Putin to participate next
year’s Group of Seven summit.
In 2014, the Russian Federation was suspended from the Group of Eight due to its invasion and illegal annexation of Ukraine’s
Crimea region. Reentry into the group was conditioned on Russia removing itself from the region and respecting the territorial integrity of its neighbors. Following Russia’s suspension, President Obama signed a law that reiterated this condition.
At the most recent G-7 summit, President Trump repeatedly pushed for Russia to be readmitted to the group and discussed inviting
President Putin to next year’s summit which will be hosted by the United States. Such an invite would go against U.S. law and previously stated conditions by G-7 leaders.
This resolution would reiterate support for Ukraine, condemn the Russian Federation’s actions in Crimea, reaffirm support for
the Russian Federation’s suspension from the G-8 and stresses that future participation hinges on respecting the territorial integrity of other nations.
I hope you will join me in supporting this legislation. For more information or to join as a cosponsor, please contact Clare
