Support the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2019 (H.R. 3550)
I recently introduced the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2019 (H.R. 3550), which expands and extends the work opportunity tax credit (WOTC) for hiring qualified veterans. Without action, the tax credit is current set to expire on December 31, 2019.
The WOTC is a Federal tax credit available to employers who hire and retain individuals from certain target groups who have consistently faced significant barriers to employment – including long-term unemployment and service-connected disabled veterans.
By providing a tax credit for businesses to hire long-term unemployed and service-connected disabled veterans, the WOTC incentivizes workplace diversity, facilitates access to good access to good jobs for veterans, helps veterans move towards self-sufficiency,
and allows participating employers to reduce their income tax liability. Under the WOTC, employers claim about $1 billion in tax credits each year, making the tax credit a win-win for both business and veterans.
My bill, H.R. 3550, would extend the veterans hiring tax credit permanently, simplify the certification of veteran status, make the credit available against payroll taxes in certain circumstances, ensure parity for tax exemptions in U.S. territories and
possessions, and require the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Labor to report annually to Congress on the cost-effectiveness of the credit increasing veterans’ employment.
