invite you to a briefing
Sharkwater Extinction and
the Shark Fin Trade
Join us to view excerpts of the award-winning documentary
Extinction and to discuss the trade in shark fins.
Sharks are in crisis due to worldwide demand for their fins: each year, fins from as many as 73 million sharks are traded on the global market. Some populations have declined by as
much as 90% in recent decades, and it is estimated that up to 25% of shark and ray species are at risk of extinction. The
Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act, H.R. 737, would prohibit the import, export, trade, distribution, and possession for commercial purposes of shark fins and products containing shark fins. The bill is co-led by Reps. Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan and Michael
McCaul, currently with 220 cosponsors.

Sharkwater Extinction (2018) is a thrilling
and inspiring action-packed journey that follows the late filmmaker Rob Stewart as he exposes the massive illegal shark fin industry and the political corruption behind it — a conspiracy that is leading to the extinction of sharks.
Rob Stewart was a Canadian photographer, filmmaker, and conservationist. He was best
known for making and directing the documentary films Sharkwater
and Revolution. In January 2017, while shooting
Sharkwater Extinction, Stewart tragically passed away during a dive off the Florida Keys. He continues to inspire us all to be better marine stewards.
