Reducing U.S. Maternal Mortality Rates

(A Breakfast Event for Members of Congress)

When: July 18, 2019

Time:   8:00 – 9:00 a.m.

Where: Room H-122

Note: Light breakfast and refreshments available. Each member may bring one staffer to the event. Event is off-the-record and closed to the public.

Dear Colleague:

We are writing to bring your attention to an invitation you should have already received to attend a Members-only breakfast forum titled, “Reducing U.S. Maternal Mortality Rates.” We are pleased to host a breakfast on this critical topic
on Thursday, July 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
in U.S. Capitol Room H-122. The event is organized and sponsored by The Commonwealth Fund and the Alliance for Health Policy. No government, corporate, or special interest funds are involved.

Rates of maternal mortality are rising in the United States. This trend is exacerbated by racial disparities in which Black women die from pregnancy-related causes at three to four times the rate of white women. Simultaneously, rural hospital and maternity
ward closures have reduced access to maternal health services for many women in the United States.

During this event, Members will candidly discuss policies and engage with experts about opportunities to eliminate racial disparities and enhance access to health services in rural areas to reduce rates of maternal mortality and morbidity across the Unites

We will be joined by two thought leaders at this breakfast: (1) Dr. Joia Adele Crear-Perry, M.D., FACOG, Founder and President, National Birth Equity Collaborative and (2) Dr. Lisa M. Hollier, M.D., MPH, Immediate Past President and Interim Chief Executive
Officer, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

For more information, please visit
. Each member may bring a staff member with them to the discussion.

Given the severity of these trends and your leadership on these issues, we hope you will join us on July 18th. Please RSVP for this breakfast discussion by contacting Kelly Appenzeller at the Alliance for Health Policy at
