Cosponsor H.R. 1888: The Expansion of Nutrition’s Role in Curricula and Healthcare (ENRICH) Act

Endorsed By: Academy Society for Nutrition, Lakeshore Foundation, American Association on Health & Disability, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine,

Cosponsors: Grijalva*

Dear Colleague:

There is no doubt that healthcare spending in the United States continues to rise around the nation. Cardiovascular disease cost Americans 555 billion dollars in 2016, and costs from chronic disease treatment account for over 75 percent of total national
health spending. Many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer and stroke are linked to dietary and lifestyle choices. Raising awareness and increasing nutrition and physical activity education can help improve many American’s diets and help reduce
these risks of these chronic diseases.

Unfortunately, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, many physicians feel inadequately trained to provide proper nutrition advice. 94 percent feel that nutrition counseling should be included during primary
care visits, but only 14 percent felt adequately trained to do so. Furthermore, the same can be said for physical activity—although expert recommendations encourage more medical schools to teach physical activity only 13 percent of medical schools integrate
it into the curricula.

This legislation would create a grant program for U.S. Medical Schools and Osteopathic Colleges to create an integrated nutrition and physical activity curriculum program. This three-year grant program would allow U.S. medical schools to establish or expand
nutrition curriculum including physical activity to highlight the role that nutrition and diet play in prevention and management of obesity and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. The understanding that proper nutrition and exercise guidance is necessary
throughout the entire life cycle should be a necessity in medical education for our future physicians.
