Fill the Cyber Skills Gap with Apprenticeships

Cosponsor the Cyber Ready Workforce Act (H.R. 2721)

Co-sponsors: Susie Lee, David RiggelmanElise Stefanik, Abigail Spanberger

Dear Colleague,

According to CyberSeek, an interactive cybersecurity jobs heat map funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the cybersecurity field has a severe shortage in talent, with
over 300,000 job openings currently.

Apprenticeships can help fill our country’s cyber workforce needs and create pathways to good-paying careers through structured on-the-job training and related technical instruction.

Cyber professionals need both education and hands-on experience to be prepared for 21st century careers – the classroom alone cannot provide the knowledge necessary for a field where threats are rapidly changing every day.

Employers, especially in cybersecurity and information technology fields, may be unfamiliar with the apprenticeship model or may not have the capacity or resources to develop and implement their own training.

To assist employers and address the cybersecurity workforce shortage, we introduced the Cyber Ready Workforce Act. Our bill would establish a Department of Labor grant program for workforce intermediaries (such as businesses, community-based organizations,
nonprofits, and colleges) to support registered apprenticeships in cybersecurity. The intermediaries could use the funding to develop the curriculum and technical instruction for an apprenticeship program, work with local businesses, and provide support services
to the apprentices.

We invite you to join us as a co-sponsor of the bipartisan Cyber Ready Workforce Act (H.R. 2721) to help ensure that businesses and government have the skilled people and critical tools they need to enhance our nation’s cybersecurity infrastructure, help
industry thrive, and strengthen our national security. Should you have any questions or would like to co-sponsor this bill, please contact Mikyla Reta with Rep. Susie Lee at Mikyla.Reta@mail.house.gov or Marek
Laco with Rep. Stefanik at Marek.Laco@mail.hosue.gov
