Dear Colleague:
Please join me as an original cosponsor of the
LGBTQ Data Inclusion Act, a bill that would improve our Federal population surveys by requiring the collection of voluntary, self-disclosed information on sexual orientation and gender identity in certain federal surveys, including the Census.
The lack of current population-based data on the LGBTQ community is striking and prohibits us from having comprehensive information on the issues affecting our communities. To better address and deliver effective programs, services and policies we must have
a representative count of all members of our community.
As the Trump administration continues to
backtrack on LGBTQ rights, we must ensure that there aren’t additional barriers that prevent us from obtaining robust data that would help create sound policy.
This bill would apply to federal surveys that currently include demographic data, information about the race or ethnicity, sex, and age of a survey participant through self-reported information or proxy reporting by a head of household. In addition, this
bill includes the implementation of a process for federal agencies to routinely assess changes needed in the collection of this data. This will provide enough flexibility for federal agencies to use the most effective data collection methods and improve its
measurement.
