Vote Yes On The Carbajal, Cisneros, Rouda, Hill (Ca), Huffman, Porter, Kilmer, Levin (Ca) Amendment to Division C

Join us in protecting the Pacific Coastline from oil spills and support its coastal economy

Dear Colleague:

We strongly urge you to support our amendment to place a moratorium on offshore oil and gas drilling and related activities off the Washington/Oregon, Northern California, Central California, and Southern California Outer Continental Shelf Planning Areas.
This measure would prohibit Fiscal Year 2020 federal funds to be used by the Administration to move forward with any leasing or preleasing activities off the four planning areas off the Pacific.

Today, there are 43 producing leases and 23 oil and gas platforms, all offshore southern California. The Trump Administration’s 2019-2024 National Outer Continental Shelf and Gas Leasing Draft Proposed Program seeks to hold 7 new lease sales in the Pacific
Region (2 each for Northern California, Central California, and Southern California, and 1 for Washington/Oregon).

Since the disastrous 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, there has not been a new or expanded lease in California state waters since 1969 or one in federal waters since 1984. This policy has enjoyed support from both Republican and Democratic Administrations.
As reminded by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, in which 100,000 barrels of crude oil spewed into the Santa Barbara Channel, and the 2015 Santa Barbara oil spill, where clean-up costs hit $92 million—our coastal communities cannot afford another disastrous
oil spill.

Our coastlines and natural resources in the Pacific region are renowned worldwide. It is our responsibility to be good stewards of our environment and protect our unique communities.

This amendment would support the $44 billion coastal economies of the region that support nearly 650,000 jobs. Future oil drilling would pose a direct threat to our local tourism economies and the success of local businesses, which are inextricably tied
to clean coasts and healthy thriving ocean ecosystems.

We strongly urge you to support this amendment to protect our coast from further oil drilling and preserve its beauty and vibrancy for future generations. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Johanna Montiel at or 5-3601 in Representative Carbajal’s office.
